S. Korea Launches International Advisory Group on N. Korea's Human Rights
2016-06-29 Updated.

South Korea has launched an advisory group on North Korea’s human rights issues.

The creation of the “sage group” on the North’s human rights issues was celebrated at an event in Seoul on Monday with South Korean Ambassador for Human Rights Lee Jung-hoon among the attendees.

The members of the group include Robert King, the U.S. special envoy for North Korean human rights issues; Marzuki Darusman, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in North Korea; Michael Kirby, former chair of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry; and South Korean Judge Song Sang-hyun, former president of the International Criminal Court(ICC).

The group is scheduled to begin its official activities on July 10th after Darusman’s term as incumbent UN rapporteur ends.

The group plans to hold a strategic meeting twice or three times a year in Seoul, New York or Geneva to discuss measures to improve North Korea’s human rights conditions and propose those measures to the UN and other concerned countries.

The first meeting will be held in New York later this year in time for an upcoming UN meeting on the North's human rights issues.
