Our army base has a really scary driver.
His name is Kang, and he’s been in the base for 35 years.
"Mr. Kang?"
"You have to remember you’re a soldier."
He was a very strict man who never let us forget our place. He was particularly harsh to me, a private. It was a sunny morning filled with the sounds of singing birds. Mr. Kang was yelling at us as usual.
"What if there was a war going on? What if you were in another base? What if your parents came here to see you and saw you were gone? How would they feel?"
One soldier said his parents will worry. Mr. Kang began yelling in a louder voice.
"They robably won’t be able to eat or sleep! This goes for animals as well. Animals care for their young just as much as people do. Do you understand how it feels to lose your child?"
That’s when I realized how loud the sounds of the birds were. I realized why we were in trouble. A mother bird had built a nest on an army truck. A soldier had parked the truck in a different place. Confused, the mother bird circled the area for hours.
"I thought he was really scary, but he’s a nice guy, too. I didn’t know that."
I found out something new about Mr. Kang. The truck was parked back in its original spot.
Ever since that day, we began to respect Mr. Kang more. We could tell he really cared for all of us.
"Look alive, soldier! Yes, sir!"
