Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani is reportedly arranging to visit South Korea around September 8 for talks with South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back.

Japan’s Asahi Shimbun daily issued the report Friday, citing multiple government sources.

If realized, it will be the first official trip by a Japanese defense minister to South Korea since 2015.

The report said Ahn and Nakatani are expected to discuss the need to maintain and strengthen security cooperation between the two countries, while emphasizing trilateral cooperation with the United States.

A meeting with Unification Minister Chung Dong-young is also reportedly under consideration.

Nakatani conveyed his intention to visit South Korea during a video call with Minister Ahn earlier this month.
