A pro-North Korean newspaper based in Japan says North Korea runs a factory capable of producing hundreds of thousands of mobile phones annually.

The Choson Sinbo, the official newspaper of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan, reported on Thursday that the Jindallae Mobile Phone Factory has very high levels of precision and productivity.

The factory was established in March 2018 in Mangyongdae District in Pyongyang, covering a total floor area of over six-thousand square meters.

The report said the factory took its first step with the production of the domestically designed and manufactured Jindallae 3 mobile phone and now produces dozens of models.

But claims that North Korea designs and produces smartphones entirely in-house may be exaggerated.

According to a 2024 report on North Korean smartphones released last year by Martin Williams of the U.S. think tank Crimson Center, all smartphones sold in North Korea are actually produced by Chinese companies.
