Two workers have died and five others are injured after they were hit by an incoming train during a safety inspection in Cheongdo, North Gyeongsang Province, following the recent heavy rain.

According to authorities, the accident took place around 10:50 a.m. Tuesday on the Gyeongbu Line when a Jinju-bound Mugunghwa train that departed from Dongdaegu Station struck the workers.

Six of the workers were from a safety inspection company and one from the Korea Railroad Corporation, and some of the five survivors are reported to be in critical condition.

None of the 89 passengers on the train are injured.

As operations on the train route were suspended, there were delays in some train schedules.

The police have launched an investigation to determine whether there were violations of the Railroad Safety Act.
