Two U.S. senators will reportedly visit South Korea this week to explore concrete measures in shipbuilding cooperation between the two nations.

According to the Associated Press, Sens. Andy Kim and Tammy Duckworth will arrive in South Korea on Sunday before traveling to Japan to meet top shipbuilders from the world’s leading shipbuilding countries.

The senators will reportedly examine the possibility of forming joint ventures to build and repair noncombat vessels for the U.S. navy in the Indo-Pacific region and bring investments to American shipyards.

Their discussions are also expected to cover plans to build small vessels for the U.S. army, as well as the maintenance of U.S. navy ships in the Indo-Pacific region.

Hanwha Ocean previously secured three maintenance, repair and operations contracts, including one for the U.S. Navy Ship Charles Drew, and the senators may discuss expanding such projects during the visit.
