Nearly ten million households in South Korea did not own homes in 2023, with more than half concentrated in Seoul and its surrounding metropolitan area.

According to data released by Statistics Korea on Sunday, there were nine-point-61 million renter households nationwide last year, with five-point-06 million located in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province and Incheon.

Renter households are defined as those without homeownership, residing in either lump-sum "jeonse" arrangements or monthly rental housing.

Gyeonggi Province accounted for the largest share, with two-point-38 million renter households, followed by Seoul with two-point-14 million.

Seoul was the only one among the nation's 17 provinces and major cities where more than half of households – 51-point-seven percent – were renters, marking the second consecutive year of growth following 51-point-two percent in 2021 and 51-point-four percent in 2022.
