The Joint Chiefs of Staff(JCS) says it took a North Korean man into custody last Thursday and handed him over to the relevant authorities.

According to the JCS on Thursday, the man was discovered within neutral waters in the Han River, after which he was tracked, monitored and taken into custody.

The man was reportedly found in waters off Gyodong Island in Ganghwa County, Incheon.

The South Korean military said there were no unusual movements from North Korean forces at the time.

The man is said to have expressed his intention to defect when he was apprehended.

This would be the second defection by a North Korean under the Lee Jae Myung administration, after another man crossed the Military Demarcation Line on July 3.
