U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the U.S. will impose a tariff of about 100 percent on chips and semiconductors.

Trump made the remarks during a White House event where he announced Apple’s large-scale investment plans. 

But he reaffirmed that no tariffs will be imposed for companies producing chips in the United States. 

Trump did not specify when the new tariff will be implemented.

However, in a CNBC interview on Tuesday, he said he plans to announce sector-specific tariffs “within the next week or so.”
