Amid the prolonged heat wave, the number of heat-related illnesses surpassed two-thousand cases.

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency(KDCA) on Friday, 116 people were admitted to 516 emergency rooms around the country for heat-related illnesses the previous day.

The daily tally from the past three days has exceeded 100.

The cumulative total between May 20 and July 24 reached two-thousand-87 patients, which is two-point-seven times the total of 772 from the same period a year earlier.

This year's total number of cases from May 15, when the KDCA began counting cases from emergency rooms, stood at two-thousand-103.

Ten people are assumed to have died from the heat so far this year.

Sixty-point-one percent of the patients experienced heat exhaustion, followed by 16-point-five percent suffering heatstroke, and 14-point-one percent reporting heat cramps.
