Record of Lady Sa’s Southward Journey
During the Ming Dynasty of China, there lived a scholar surnamed Yu. He married Lady Sa, who was a faithful and virtuous wife. The two loved each other deeply. Unfortunately, they had no children even after nine years of marriage. Lady Sa asked her husband to get a second wife so that he could have a child. At first, Yu refused the idea. But the wife was so determined that the husband eventually accepted another wife reluctantly. The second wife was Lady Gyo, who turned out to be evil and extremely jealous. She pretended to respect the first wife on the surface. But in reality she wanted to get rid of Lady Sa and become the first wife herself. Her desire only became stronger after she gave birth to a son.

Lady Gyo tried to slander the first wife in front of the husband at every chance. Yu didn’t believe it at first. But the wicked second wife even killed her own son to accuse Lady Sa of the terrible crime. Overwhelmed with grief over the death of his only son, Yu lost his reason and hated Lady Sa, who was framed for the murder. He expelled the innocent wife from the house and made Lady Gyo his first wife instead.

Lady Gyo’s misdeeds didn’t end there. As it turns out she had a secret lover and they formed a sinister conspiracy against Yu and reported him to the royal court. As a result, the poor scholar was banished to a remote area, while Lady Gyo and her man stole Yu’s entire fortune and escaped together.

While in exile, Yu learned that he had been deceived by his second wife. His heart was broken at the thought of his beloved wife, Lady Sa. He bitterly regretted having abandoned such a loyal wife. After a while, the royal court belatedly found that Yu had been unjustly accused, and he was cleared of the false charge. As soon as he was set free, Yu set out in search of Lady Sa, who had been wandering from place to place. When the two were dramatically reunited, Yu sincerely apologized to Lady Sa. He asked her to be his wife again, and they returned home together. The evil Lady Gyo and her man were caught later and put to death for their wrongdoings.
