"S. Korea-US Summit to be Difficult Discussion"

News2006-11-15

A former senior official in Washington says President Roh Moo-hyun and President George W. Bush are likely to make some difficult discussions this weekend in Hanoi on North Korea sanctions.

The Washington Post quoted on Tuesday former senior director for Asia at the National Security Council Michael Green as saying also that South Korea is doing virtually nothing to impose punitive measures on the North.

The paper said that while the U.N. sanctions have clearly exacted a toll on the North, Bush is expected to pressure Roh at the meeting to do more about enforcing the U.N. sanctions.

Roh and Bush are scheduled to meet on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in the Vietnamese capital city on Saturday.

Green’s remarks come a day after Seoul announced that it will not join in a U.S.-led plan aimed at intercepting shipments of weapons of mass destruction to and from North Korea and other countries.
