Economy Ranked World’s 12th Largest

The nation’s economy was ranked as 12th largest in the world in 2005 in terms of gross domestic product (GDP).

The National Statistical Office said Monday that the nation’s GDP recorded seven-hundred-86-billion dollars, up a little over 15-and-half percent from last year.

The nation’s per capita income posted 16-thousand-291 dollars, the 29th largest in the world.

South Korean exports ranked 12th, shipping out more than two-hundred-80-billion dollars worth of products worldwide while its imports took 13th place at two-hundred-60 billion dollars. South Korea’s trade dependency recorded 69-point-three percent, the ninth highest among members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Foreign currency reserves reached two-hundred-10 billion dollars last year, which is the fourth largest behind Japan, China and Taiwan.

The economy grew four percent last year and ranked seventh among OECD members.

The domestic shipbuilding industry has maintained the summit position in production since overtaking Japanese competitors in 2002.

Automobile production is fifth largest in the world.

South Korea is the 13th largest rice producer in terms of total production, and in terms of production per unit area, it is the tenth largest in the world.
