Japan Shrine Nixes Request to Remove Names
A group of ethnic Koreans who want their deceased relatives' names removed from Japan's controversial Yasukuni war shrine have been barred from submitting the request.
The group and its attorneys visited the shrine Friday to submit the request but were denied entry by Yasukuni staff.
The deceased relatives were drafted by the Japanese military during Japan's colonial rule of the Korea Peninsula.
Deciding to deliver the request by mail, the group blasted the shrine for adding the names without consent and for giving the cold shoulder to the bereaved families of the relatives.
The shrine honors Japan's war dead, including Class-A war criminals.
A Japanese court has rejected a lawsuit filed by the group for the names' removal and damages. The plaintiffs said they will file an appeal.
