Heavy Snow Shuts Down Gwangju Schools

Heavy snow over the weekend has shut down schools and halted flight operations in the country's southwest region.

People going to work Monday morning had to tread icy roads as 30 centimeters of snow fell in Gwangju, South Jeolla Province, the highest since weather observation began there in 1939.

Six hundred public schools were closed in the region, including 43 percent of those in Gwangju and 56.6 percent of those in the province.

As of 9 a.m., Haenam received 38 centimeters of snow, Jangheung 34 and Mokpo 30.
