'Abductee Issue Front for Sanction Drive'

News2005-10-04

North Korea’s state-run news agency has blasted Japanese conservatives for allegedly using the North's past abduction of Japanese nationals as an excuse to call for economic sanctions.

In a Tuesday commentary, the Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) said conservatives' calls for imposing sanctions on the North were politically motivated, and advised Tokyo not to be swayed by their argument.

The KCNA added that if the two governments ever sit down again to discuss the normalization of bilateral ties, the first matter of discussion should be Tokyo’s accounting for its own past wrongdoings.

It also warned the Japanese government of negative consequences if it chooses to 'blindly' pursue anti-Pyongyang policy.
