Reliance on New and Renewable Energy Increasing in S. Korea

South Korea’s reliance on new and renewable energy has been on the rise over the past five years and sales of such energy have increased almost 70 percent on average per year.

Statistics Korea released its analysis of the recent five-year trend on the use of renewable energy on Friday. The distribution rate rose point-eight percentage points from two-point-37 percent in 2007 to three-point-17 percent in 2012.

During the same period sales of such energy grew 68-and-a-half percent.

However, South Korea’s efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions are not catching up with the increasing use of new and renewable energy.

The nation’s greenhouse gas emissions increased from 568 million tons of CO2 in 2005 to 668 million tons in 2010, an increase of 100 million tons.
