'S. Korea to Launch Homegrown Space Rocket by 2020'

The government has announced mid-to-long term space development plans with the aim to build and put a rocket in space on its own well ahead of earlier plans.

The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning said Tuesday that South Korea will develop a three-stage space rocket capable of putting a one-and-a-half ton satellite into space by June 2020, 15 months ahead of schedule.

It will also launch a test space rocket a year early in December 2017.

South Korea has completed an engine design for its own space launch vehicles at a cost of 260 billion won. It started the design in 2010.

The ministry also announced a project to launch a lunar reconnaissance orbiter and a lunar lander by 2020.
