S. Korea to Launch Satellite Thursday

South Korea's will launch a satellite on Thursday in Russia.

The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning said Wednesday that the Science and Technology Satellite 3 (STSAT-3) will be launched at 4:10 p.m. (KST) on Thursday from Russia's Yasny Launch Base.

The satellite arrived at the Russian launch site on October 24th, went through functional checks and got its battery charged. It has been combined with the Russian launch vehicle “Dnepr” and is ready for launch.

The ministry sent 15 scientists to Russia last month and eight additional officials on Monday for launch preparations.

STSAT-3 is equipped with an infrared radar and is South Korea’s third satellite for space observation.  STSAT-1 was launched in 2003 and went out of service in 2009, while STSAT-2A and STSAT-2B were lost in failed attempts to launch the country’s first space vehicles in 2009 and 2010.
