A construction team will leave for Antarctica next week to continue building South Korea’s second science research base in the Antarctic.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said Tuesday that the 150-member team will leave next week for the second phase of construction on the “Jang Bogo Antarctic Research Station.”
The team will go to Christchurch, New Zealand and board the South Korean icebreaker “Araon” next Friday to travel to Terra Nova Bay in the Antarctic.
The government plans to finish the Jang Bogo research station by next year. The four-thousand-458 square meter base of 16 buildings, including lodgings for researchers and research facilities, is expected to cost 104-point-seven billion won.
An official said the government is building the base on the mainland to enhance the country’s research capacity in the Antarctic. The official said South Korea’s research activities have been limited because the King Sejong base, which was built 24 years ago, is located on the South Pole’s northernmost King George Island.
