A meteorological observatory in Gangwon Province predicts the region will see higher temperatures and less snowfall when Pyeongchang hosts the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
The observatory based its prediction on an analysis of the average, highest and lowest temperatures between February ninth and the 25th from 1972 to 2011. Pyeongchang will host the games during that 17-day span in 2018.
The analysis shows the average lowest temperature rose from minus eleven degrees Celsius in the 1980s to minus nine-point-four degrees in 2000. The average highest temperature jumped from minus one-point-one degrees to minus one-point-three degrees during the same period. The average temperature surged from minus six degrees to minus three-point-nine degrees.
Considering the most conducive temperature for skiing ranges between minus five and minus ten degrees Celsius, experts say South Korea will likely need to take precautions for unfavorable weather conditions to successfully host the Games.
