Gov't Says S. Korean Waters Safe from Japan's Radiation Leak

The government says South Korea's coastal waters are safe from the radiation leak at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said Thursday that it and the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission recently did a joint check of radiation levels at six spots in waters south of Jeju Island.

The ministry said no radioactive material was detected at three locations, while only trace amounts were found at the others.

The trace amounts were within the range of an average reading for five years before the radiation leak at the Japanese power plant.

A ministry official said the data is significant and shows South Korea’s seas are safe, since the six locations lie on the Kuroshio current that flows northeast past Japan.

The ministry said it will increase the frequency of the radioactivity checks from once every three months to twice a month in four areas close to Japan, in light of rising public concerns over the Fukushima radiation leak.
