South Korea has finished building a laboratory that can check samples for very small amounts of nuclear material.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission says the Clean Laboratory for Analysis of Safeguards Samples (CLASS) will help the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) strengthen its inspection and non-proliferation capabilities.

The commission said the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute will be able to receive samples this year from the IAEA. Analysis will be done to determine if a country where the sample is taken is engaged in nuclear activity and if so, what type of activity.

The commission said the IAEA approved Korea's membership in its network of analytical laboratories (NWAL) in December once it confirmed the lab was technically qualified.
