S. Korea to Launch Arirang-5 Satellite on Thursday

South Korea will launch its Arirang-5 multipurpose satellite from Russia on Thursday.

The satellite will lift off at 11:39 p.m., Korean time, from the Yasny space launch center, which is about one-thousand-800 kilometers south of Moscow.

South Korean scientists and engineers have completed all checkups and preparations for the launch.

Fifteen minutes after blast-off, the satellite will separate from the rocket at an altitude of 550 kilometers.

The launch will be confirmed to be successful when the satellite communicates with a ground station in Daejeon, Korea, at 5:36 a.m. on Friday.

The Arirang-5 is the country's first satellite that has a synthetic aperture radar device and can take photos of the earth at any time of the day regardless of the weather. It will send high resolution satellite images at an altitude of 550 kilometers for the next five years.
