The temperature became unbearable in the Ulsan region on Thursday as the afternoon high hit 38-point-eight degrees Celsius.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said it was the highest temperature in the South Gyeongsang city since records were first kept 82 years ago. It broke 1983’s high of 38-point-six.
At one of the measuring stations in the area, a high of 40 degrees Celsius was recorded.
The intense heat affected the rest of the nation as well. In Uljin County to the north of Ulsan, the temperature reached 37-point-eight degrees Celsius. The temperature stood at 32-point-eight degrees in Seoul.
The weather agency said temperatures were ten degrees higher than previous years because the high pressure system from the North Pacific pushed warm and humid air to the Korean Peninsula in sunny weather.
The sizzling weather is forecast to continue for the time being with the mercury rising above 33 degrees Celsius. Most parts of the nation are expected to experience tropical nights.
