'Large-scale Earthquake on Korean Peninsula Unlikely'

The number of earthquakes on the Korean Peninsula has increased about 55 percent over the past three years.

The Korea Meteorological Administration says as of Sunday, a total of 65 earthquakes were observed this year, up 54-point-eight percent from 42 quakes in 2010.

The annual number of quakes surged from 15-point-38 in the 1980s to 44-point-nine in the 2000s.

Among the 65 tremors that hit the peninsula this year, 46 quakes occurred in the Yellow Sea.

The weather agency denied the speculations that the frequent quakes in the Yellow Sea are signs of a massive earthquake, but the peninsula could witness more small scale quakes.
