South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju saw the most tropical nights last month in 40 years.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said Thursday that nighttime temperatures topped 25 degrees Celsius for 26-and-a-half days in July.
Temperatures were averaged from two locations on the island to calculate the record number of nights, the most since 1973 when proper weather observation facilities were installed.
The average number of tropical nights recorded at 45 locations nationwide came to six-point-six days, which is the second largest since 1973.
When the seasonal rain front was affecting the central region from July 8th to the 27th, precipitation there was 126 percent of the average of previous years. Precipitation in the south and Jeju Island were 15 percent and four percent, respectively.
The weather agency attributed the stark differences in rainfall to the seasonal rain front that mostly affected the central region and North Korea. It explained that the high pressure system from the North Pacific expanded to southern areas of Korea unlike previous years and prevented the front from moving southward.
