Monsoon Rains Batter Central Region, More Downpours Expected Tues.

South Korea’s central region felt the full force of the monsoon season Monday morning.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said many homes and roads were flooded from the deluge, and the Seoul government urged citizens to use public transportation.

The police agency said ten to 20-centimeter-deep pools of water in the Gangnam and Sadang subway station areas made the work commute difficult for drivers.

A heavy rain advisory was issued at 7:10 a.m. for the capital, and the municipal government operated 84 water pumps in 38 locations.

The advisory was lifted at around 2 p.m., however, cold and dry air moving south from the northwest will bring more rain to the central region on Tuesday.

As much as 150 millimeters of rain is expected in Seoul and Gyeonggi and Gangwon Provinces. Thirty to 80 millimeters is forecast for Chungcheong and northern Gyeonggi province areas through Tuesday.
