Climate Change Promotes Spread of Foreign Wasp in S.Korea

The unseasonably hot weather is aiding the spread of a foreign species of wasp in South Korea.

The National Institute of Biological Resources says Asian predatory wasps have been spotted in urban areas as well as mountainous regions, disrupting the ecosystem and causing social and economic damage. The wasp normally lives in subtropical regions.

Asian predatory wasps were first found in Busan in 2003. But last year, the species was spotted in northern regions, such as Mount Jiri and Samcheok in Gangwon Province.

The institute explained the foreign species of wasp could adapt to the environment of South Korea because of climate change, and the nation’s unusually warm temperatures this summer.
