2nd Case of Deadly Tick-borne Disease Confirmed in S. Korea

A second case of a deadly disease transmitted by ticks has been confirmed in South Korea.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday that it confirmed the second case of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) in a 73-year-old patient who died in Jeju on May 16th. SFTS virus was found in a blood sample of the latest victim surnamed Kang.

Kang, who owned an orchard and reared cattle, suffered from severe fever and muscle aches from May second. His body temperature soared to 39 degrees Celsius on May sixth. Kang was hospitalized after showing other symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting. He died 15 days after contracting the disease.

The first confirmed victim of SFTS in South Korea was a 63-year-old woman who died in Gangwon Province last August.
