Solar Particles Cause Planes to Divert Polar Routes

The Korean Space Weather Center has warned that airplanes will divert North Pole routes for the next two days to avoid a strong solar radiation storm.

The center under the National Radio Research Agency said Thursday that the proton particles ejected from the sun reached the earth’s atmosphere at 12:40 p.m. Thursday.

The influx of solar particles is categorized as a “strong” or S3 storm, with S5 being the highest.

The center said that the influx of the particles is feared to disrupt radio communications of aircraft flying across North Pole routes.

The center urged airlines to divert flights across the polar routes for the next two days, citing the expected increase of solar radiation.

The flight hours of South Korea-bound planes departing from eastern America will increase by two hours if they divert North Pole routes to fly North Pacific routes.
