S. Korea to Launch Arirang-5 Satellite in August from Russia

South Korea will launch the Arirang-5 multipurpose satellite in August in Russia.

The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning said on Thursday that it has designated August 22nd as the launch date for the Arirang 5 satellite, which will lift off from the Yasny space launch center in Russia. The ministry also designated August 23rd as a backup launch date.

The Arirang 5 is the country's first satellite with a synthetic aperture radar that allows observation of the earth's surface even at night regardless of the weather.

South Korea invested 238 billion won to develop the satellite, which will operate at an altitude of 550 kilometers for five years to provide images required to monitor natural disasters and identify natural resources.
