S. Korea's 1st Icebreaker Successfully Explores Larsen Ice Shelf

South Korea’s first icebreaker has successfully explored the Larsen Ice Shelf in the northwest part of the Weddell Sea near Antarctica.

The Korea Polar Research Institute said that the Araon became the second icebreaker in the world after the U.S.’ Palmer to reach the Larsen Ice Shelf during the winter.

The area surrounding the Larsen Ice Shelf has a temperature of minus 40 degrees Celsius during winter and is considered to have the most extreme cold weather in the world.

The research institute said countries around the world are actively trying to find out the reason the Larsen Ice Shelf is rapidly collapsing.
