A domestic research team has developed a drug candidate which treats obesity and diabetes at the same time.

The team led by Ahn Jin-hee at the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology on Wednesday said that it created a new drug candidate which effectively prevents obesity and diabetes by controlling formation of triglycerides and promoting insulin secretion.

The team said that a gain in weight was controlled by eleven percent and blood sugar dropped by 59 percent in mice which were injected with the substance for four weeks.

The team plans to launch a clinical test after applying for a patent.
