S.Korea to Launch Space Rocket Friday as Scheduled

South Korea will launch the Naro space rocket on Friday as scheduled pending potential rainfall that day.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Korea Aerospace Research institute (KARI) on Monday held a meeting to discuss the launch date and decided to proceed with a launch Friday afternoon as scheduled.

The exact launch time will be announced at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.

The ministry said light rains are in the forecast for the coastal regions of South Jeolla Province and Jeju Island for Friday afternoon, but the weather forecast could change. It added that the launch of the space rocket could be delayed due to rain.

Launch of a space rocket requires optimal weather conditions with no rain clouds within a 50-kilometer radius of the launch site. Lightning in the rocket’s flight trajectory could also force a launch delay as it could damage the rocket’s electronics system and on-board satellite.
