The secretary-general of the Korea Football Association has personally traveled to FIFA headquarters to explain an incident involving a South Korean soccer player that cost him his Olympic bronze medal.
The football association said Kim Joo-sung visited FIFA headquarters in Zurich on Thursday and thoroughly explained about midfielder Park Jong-woo brandishing a banner reading "Dokdo is our territory” that was handed to him by a spectator after the 2-0 Olympic victory. The association said that Kim presented photographs and videos when he offered the explanation.
Kim reportedly told FIFA officials that Park’s action was not premeditated and that it was entirely incidental.
After discovering a photograph of Park holding the Dokdo banner, the International Olympic Committee concluded Park’s move was a political action and referred the matter to FIFA.
An official of the Korea Football Association said the association is hoping for a positive outcome since Kim personally went to FIFA to explain the situation.
