Report: South Korea easily achieved its goal of winning ten gold medals for a top-ten finish at the 2012 London Olympics, which closed Sunday. The country's best athletes won 13 gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals to finish in fifth place.
Team Korea sent 129 officials and 245 athletes to the games for competition in 22 events. Han Soon-chul was the last South Korean to medal, capping off the nation's successful run with a silver in lightweight boxing on Sunday afternoon.
The fifth-place finish was South Korea's best at an Olympic games overseas. At the Seoul Olympics in 1988, Korea won 12 gold, ten silver and eleven bronze medals to finish in fourth place.
Some unexpected winners helped Korea earn its spot in the top ten, including medalists in sports that aren't as popular domestically, such as fencing, shooting and gymnastics. Korea won five gold medals in shooting and fencing, which became new winning territory for its athletes.
The soccer team confirmed its potential with a bronze medal finish, and Son Yeon-jae earned her country recognition in rhythmic gymnastics with a fifth-place finish.
Korean athletes wrote a new history at the London Olympics with their sacrifice and sweat, and they're now looking towards the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro.
