South Korea finished in fourth place in women’s handball at the Olympics after losing 29-31 to Spain in a bronze medal match. The game held at the Basketball Arena within London’s Olympic Park had been given two extra time sessions before it came to a finish.
The South Korean team had previously won a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics and a bronze at the Beijing Games in 2008.
Women’s volleyball for South Korea also came to a discouraging close, as they lost a bronze medal match against Japan at Earls Court on Saturday. South Korea was defeated by a set score of 0-3 (22-25 24-26 21-25).
South Korea had stunned 2008 Olympics champion Brazil with a 3-0 win in pool matches, while it later moved onto the semifinal round after beating Italy, ranked fourth in the world, by 3-1 in the top eight rounds.
South Korea’s volleyball team is currently ranked 15th in the world.
Competition also ended quickly for South Korea’s heavyweight taekwondo athletes as Cha Dong-min and Lee In-jong both lost in the quarter finals – leaving South Korea with one gold and a silver each from taekwondo in this Olympics.
