Rhythmic gymnast Son Yeon-jae ranked fourth on the first day of the qualification round, raising hopes that she’ll have a chance to advance to the all-around final at the London Olympics.
Son will take a combined score of 55-point-900 points in hoop and ball segments back to Wembley Arena on Friday where she will compete in clubs and ribbon routines for a shot in the final. Only ten of 24 will advance to the last round on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the South Korean women’s volleyball team lost to the U.S. 3-0 during semifinals at Earls Court on Thursday. The Korean team will now compete for the bronze on Saturday against Japan, which fell to Brazil 3-0.
A win against Japan would be the first time for South Korea to medal in women's volleyball in 36 years.
South Korea’s women’s handball team will also compete for the bronze against Spain on Sunday. The Korean team lost to Norway 31-25 in a semifinal match at Cooper Box on Thursday.
Currently, South Korea ranks fifth in the overall medal tally with 12 gold, seven silver and six bronze medals.
