The 2012 London Olympic Games have officially kicked off its 17-day run with an opening ceremony extravaganza.
The ceremony, entitled “Isles of Wonder,” lasted for more than three hours on Friday night local time in London.
James Bond star Daniel Craig, music legend Sir Paul McCartney and a number of other British celebrities attended the ceremony. The glitzy event was directed by Danny Boyle, who is an Oscar-winner for his film “Slumdog Millionaire.”
Athletes from 205 nations entered the stadium in alphabetical order. The South Korean delegation was the 100th team to enter the stadium while North Korea’s was 53rd in line.
South Korea aims to win more than ten gold medals for a top-ten finish in the medal count.
On the first day of the Games on Saturday, South Korea will compete in men’s archery and the ten-meter air pistol shooting. Shooting star Jin Jong-oh is looking to snatch the nation's first gold in the men’s ten-meter air pistol event.
Swimmer Park Tae-hwan will participate in the preliminary heat of the men’s 400-meter freestyle, aiming to repeat his gold-medal performance at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
