Sweltering Heat Continues Unabated

Sweltering temperatures are continuing unabated across the country after Typhoon Khanun brought an end to seasonal rain.

The Korea Meteorological Administration says a high atmospheric pressure system from the North Pacific is the cause behind the scorching heat wave.

The weather agency said that the high atmospheric pressure system developed in Hawaii, then moved toward the southern parts of Japan last month and now is now covering the entire Korean Peninsula after the monsoon season ended.

As a result, a heat wave advisory has been issued for most parts of the nation, excluding mountainous areas in Gangwon Province.

The weather agency forecast that afternoon highs will hover around 35 degrees Celsius in Seoul early next month. The agency says this summer temperatures will likely climb to record highs seen in 1994.
