Heat Wave to Drag on Through Mid-August

Milyang in South Gyeongsang Province posted this year's high temperature of 36-point-seven degrees Celsius on Wednesday amid heat wave warnings spread throughout the country.

The mercury in Hapcheon soared to 36-point-two degrees Celsius, while Daegu residents sweated under 35-point-three degree weather. Gangneung saw a high of 34-point-seven degrees and Seoul peaked at 32-point-one degrees.

Tropical nights are expected on Wednesday in regions along the east coast and southern inland areas.

Afternoon highs are forecast to top 35 degrees Celsius in Gyeongsang Province on Thursday. The central region and Jeolla province are also expected to see the temperatures rise to 35 degrees.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said that the scorching weather will likely continue through mid-August as the high atmospheric pressure from the North Pacific is pushing hot and humid air towards the Korean Peninsula.
