Ten names given to geographic features by South Koreans in the Antarctic have become official.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs says ten names its geographic naming committee selected on Tuesday will be newly included in the Composit Gazetteer of Antarctica, the international geographical dictionary for the Antarctic.

The South Pole's Insubong Hill located southwest of Weaver Peninsula was given its moniker since South Korean explorers say it resembles a peak of the same name in South Korea.

Auraji Valley in Jeongseon, Gangwon Province and Ulsanbawi Peak at Mt. Seorak have also lent their names to geographic features in the Antarctic due to similarities in appearance.

South Korea registered 17 geographic names for the Antarctic in the dictionary last year and has added ten more this year for a total of 27.

The Composit Gazetteer of Antarctica holds 37-thousand names registered by 23 countries. The U.S. has registered the most at 13-thousand.
