A small earthquake was detected early Wednesday in waters near Jeju Island.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said a three-point-four-magnitude earthquake was recorded in waters 46 kilometers northwest of Jeju around 1:33 a.m.

The weather agency said the quake is the largest to be detected this year, but it noted that residents of nearby islands didn't feel the tremor since it occurred in the sea.

The agency added that a two-magnitude earthquake occurred in Gimje, North Jeolla Province around 5 a.m. Wednesday.
