Match-Fixing Allegations Surface in Motorboat Racing

The focus is shifting from mainstream sports as match-fixing allegations are now also being confirmed in events such as motorboat racing.

Prosecutors in the city of Uijeongbu north of Seoul have arrested a motorboat racer for receiving money from a gambling broker and passing along information on expected race rankings.

Prosecutors say the racer, identified only by his surname Park, collected 270 million won or over 240-thousand dollars from the broker on seven occasions since last May. Park apparently sent the predicted rankings through text messages to the broker.

Meanwhile, prosecutors in Daegu investigating match-fixing allegations in the professional volleyball league summoned a current player on the men's volleyball team for questioning on Thursday.

The suspect is believed to have helped fix matches in return for bribes between 2009 and last year.
