Seoul's Asan Medical Center announced Thursday that a team of its doctors successfully carried out a seven organ transplant.

The operation was performed last October on seven-year-old Cho Eun-seo who was born with a rare, incurable disease. The team was led by Kim Dae-yeon, an associate professor at the Department of Pedriatic Surgery.

Due to her condition, Cho had limited digestive function and threw up every time she ate. She initially wasn’t expected to live past the age of ten.

During the nine hour surgery, Cho received a liver, stomach, duodenum, pancreas, large intestine, small intestine and spleen from a brain-dead patient.

Organ transplant surgeries on children are more delicate compared to adults given that there must be a match in the size of organs in addition to a matching blood type.

The recent surgery has marked a major step in the nation’s history of organ transplants.
