Local Researchers Develop Tough Fiber Using Graphene

A group of local researchers says it has developed a fiber that is six times stronger than spider webs using graphene.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology said Thursday that a team led by Hangyang University Professor Kim Seon Jeong succeeded in developing a new fiber using graphene and carbon nanotubes.

The researchers are hoping the new fiber will be used to make artificial muscles or sensors as well as bulletproof clothing, since it is tough and flexible as human muscle and has outstanding electrical capabilities.

The recent finding was posted Wednesday on Nature Communications, which is a sister magazine of leading science journal “Nature.”
