A South Korean speed skater is emerging as a new star athlete after winning two gold medals in the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria.

Sixteen-year-old Jang Mi crossed the finish line first in both the women’s 500-meter and 15-hundred-meter events.

She used to be an inline skater but switched to speed skating three years ago. Jang finished third in the 500-meter event in the Junior World Cup.

Despite her late start, Jang is expected to grow into a great speed skater in the future with her physical advantages such as her height.

With her outstanding performance, Jang is regarded as a leading athlete who will help South Korea win medals in Winter Olympic Games in Sochi and Pyeongchang.

The inaugural Winter Youth Olympic opened on January 13 and will run through Sunday.
