The Korea Meteorological Administration is conducting experiments with artificial snow in the event snow doesn’t fall when Pyeongchang hosts the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

The temperature continues to rise in Daegwallyeong in Gangwon Province due to global warming, which has resulted in a jump in rainfall. However, the region has seen a drop in snowfall.

The weather agency succeeded to increase snowfall in 40 percent of its experiments over the past four years. It plans to boost its success rate further before the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

The artificial snow is created by spraying cloud condensation nuclei or “cloud seeds" throughout the area from a plane. In the past, the KMA conducted the experiments with small chartered planes, but it will introduce its own plane for the experiments this year.
