Kim Yu-na May Run for Athletes' Commission of IOC

Olympic champion figure skater Kim Yu-na has expressed interest to contend for a seat on the Athletes’ Commission of the International Olympic Committee.

Kim recently hinted for the first time of her ambition to serve on the commission. The Olympic champion helped South Korea’s Pyeongchang win its bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games by delivering a successful and appealing presentation in Durban, South Africa, in July this year.

But Kim’s challenge for a seat on the commission is closely tied to whether she retires from the ice rink.

Due to an IOC rule, she will be able to run for a spot on the IOC’s Athletes’ Commission only for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games if she retires in one or two years.

However, if she decides to compete in the Sochi Olympics as an active skater, Kim is eligible to run for a seat on the commission for the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic Games as well.

Kim’s decision whether to run for the IOC’s Athletes’ Commission will likely be another factor that determies how long she will remain an active figure skater.
